Zingiber is a edgy Australian swimwear label that fuses quality Italian lycra with stunning graphic prints to create unique and well-designed swimwear for women. Designed by owner and designer, Nicola Spicer from Sydney, Nicola uses her worldly experience as inspiration when creating her garments, and has big plans for the future of Zingiber Swimwear. We decided to sit down and have a chat to Nicola about both her inspirations and her favourite parts of the fashion world…
Q: We are so excited to have you on board for QTFWA 2014! Can you tell me a bit about your company and the style of garments you create?
Zingiber is a unique label that expels edgy, classic, beautiful styles of swimwear for woman of all ages. Our designs are influenced by cultures and arts from around the globe, bringing the world to your beach. Using the highest quality Italian lycra and hardware that is sourced from Europe with custom designed prints that are exclusively made for Zingiber. All garments are designed by myself and beautifully made in Australia.
Q: How did the company start?
After studying design at university and traveling to 28 countries where I saw the beauty and cultures
of this world, I was heavily influenced through my design process. Always living by the ocean and never being able to find any swimwear that caught my eye, I decided to make my own label that was different from the rest. So, that is when I began drawing up my own textile prints to be printed on lycra.
Q: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
After my traveling, I hand picked certain styles from cultures I saw around the world to create my own unique label. I look to bring a worldly/cultural aspect to the retail shelves within Australia, and something unique that stood out from the rest.
Q: What can you tell me about your latest collection, and how are you motivated to push the boundaries of your previous collections?
‘Collection el niño’ has been influenced by my travels through Mexico: Aztec, Mexican Folk Art prints and guns were used in this range. This is my first collection, however I am already planning next year, which I am determined to exceed my limits ten fold.
Q: What do you love most about working in the fashion industry?
Creating trends, making people feel they are wearing something unique and exclusive to the beach and making them feel beautiful, classy and edgy.
Q: Do you feel as a successful designer, it is important to know how to not only vision your creations but to be able to sew them all as well? I understand different designers have different opinions on this…
I am a designer. I have the most amazing manufacturing crew here in Australia, whom I work very closely with and they are really honest and professional with me in terms of the technical side of the garments. I have 100% trust in them to make sure the garment is technically correct. The quality of these garments are second to none.
Q: When you aren’t working, how do you enjoy spending your time?
Traveling, snowboarding, road trips and dreaming of new ideas.
Q: Who is your style icon?
I don’t have a style icon as such. But I do appreciate people that step over the boundaries and think outside the current ‘fashion’ world.
Q: Describe your label in three words:
Unique. Beautiful. Classic.
Q: Do you have any advice for others that seek to make a mark in the fashion industry?
Stay focused. Dream big. Stand out from the rest. Go with your instincts.
